Ordinary Monsters online workshop

Ordinary Monsters is an online workshop inspired by all those feelings we tend to hide, ignore, bottle up or repress. In this workshop, you will learn an easy technique to make an artisan paper mask. Your very own chance to have some fun and let your monster out!

The video tutorial is about 15 min long and I would recommend watching the entire video before starting. It takes about 1.5 to 3 hrs to finish a mask, depending on your pace, and I find the process very enjoyable and relaxing. Below is the list of materials you’ll need and the links to download the templates. Please read the recommendations carefully to get the best results.

MATERIALS

  • Scissors

  • Craft knife

  • PVA glue and a glue stick

  • Pencil

  • Stapler

  • String. About 1 meter will do.

  • Magazine cuttings. I recommend using magazines printed on matte paper (avoid glossy paper) to get the best results when texturising your cuttings. Pick images with different shades of the colour or colours of your choice. I used cuttings of different shades of yellow for my mask but I could’ve chosen more than one colour. You can experiment with different colour combinations until you find one that you like. Anything goes!

  • One (kids mask) or two (adult mask) pieces of A4 white card (160 - 270 gms). Print the mask templates on the card. You can download the templates here: Adult mask template, adult mask nose template, and kids mask template.
Alternatively, you can print the templates on regular paper and glue them to any piece of card you have lying around at home.

Note: For a better experience you can mute the video’s audio and play your favourite music instead.

The age group for this workshop is 10+ years old. Younger kids can do it too but some of the steps will require assistance and supervision from an adult.

To subscribe to the workshop all you have to do is click on the button below and follow the instructions. You will receive an email with a link to the video tutorial and an access code after completing your subscription. Once you’re subscribed, you have ‘forever access’ to the online tutorial and can watch it as many times as you like.

Enjoy and use the hashtag #ordinarymonsters and tag @theycallmeninu to share your creations on Instagram. I would love to see your masks!
